Bodo Sperlein has sought to represent the beauty and complexity of the natural world with the Botanica collection through meticulous changes in shade and stratified areas with different pile heights. Its high level of detail in the representation of the drawing and its pronounced volumetric effect are achieved through the combination of two artisanal techniques: hand-tufted and carving.
Botanica is the first collaboration between GAN and Bodo Sperlein, for which the German designer based in London has created a collection of rugs with a biophilic design, establishing a direct connection between the spaces in which they are integrated and nature. By using subtle changes in shade, the Botanica collection rugs create an illusion of depth and dynamism that enhances their organic character and volumetric presence.

Founded by Bodo Sperlein in 2000, the studio is based at Oxo Tower Wharf on London's South Bank. Trained at the University of the Arts London, Bodo has spent over two decades building a practice defined by material precision and a quiet confidence in craft. The studio collaborates with leading international manufacturers across furniture, lighting, tableware, and textiles. Recent partners include Meissen, Lobmeyr, Dibbern, GAN Rugs, LZF Lamps, Schotten & Hansen, and Gravelli — brought together most visibly through the studio's annual Menu exhibition at Milan Design Week, which Bodo has curated since 2024. Longer-standing relationships with brands such as Dior, Swarovski, Mulberry, and Nikko reflect the studio's position across both luxury fashion and design manufacturing.
