KAMMERSPIEL

This September, Bodo Sperlein’s solo exhibition Kammerspiel was open to the public. Located in the heart of Vienna, the exhibition was organised by the design-focused Gallery Zippenfenig and took place in a historic vaulted space at the exclusive Member Club Am Hof 8. Curated by the designer himself, the show featured a selection of his current and iconic works: furniture, lighting, wall installations, rugs, and silverware.

Kammerspiel unfolds as an atmospheric spatial composition where each object is part of a thoughtfully orchestrated whole. Sperlein masterfully weaves light, material, form, and space into a dense dialogue. Intimate in scale, the exhibition invites contemplative engagement with sculptural design at the highest level of craftsmanship.

Gallery Zippenfenig is Vienna’s first gallery dedicated exclusively to contemporary design in an international context. It represents creators working at the intersection of applied art, product, and spatial design, whose works emerge in limited editions or as unique pieces. Kammerspiel marks the gallery’s first collaboration with Bodo Sperlein, signalling a renewed presence of auteur design in Vienna’s cultural landscape.

Featured Works

The Wave Table and Wave Column, carved from solid bleached maple wood, evoke sculpted landscapes through their fluid, geological lines. These sculptural objects merge function with expressive form. They were shown in 2025 as part of the major exhibition Jugendstil – Made in Munich at the Kunsthalle Munich, for which Sperlein also served as exhibition designer. Now shown publicly in Vienna for the first time.

A highlight is the presentation of the Orchid pendant lights, designed for the Viennese manufacturer Lobmeyr. In addition to the large chandelier, the new Orchid floor lamp was introduced. Both are made of handcrafted brass, combining floral and biomorphic silhouettes that animate light and shadow in poetic motion.

The Botanica rug, created for iconic Spanish brand GAN Rugs, is meticulously hand-crafted from fine New Zealand wool. Its relief-like surface draws on plant-based structures, recalling the blooming of petals, the folding of fungi and the extraction of botanical textures. It forms the foundation of the spatial composition, beneath the Wave Table.

Mounted on the wall is Drapery, a monumental mural that forms part of the Artisan Collection designed by Sperlein for the Spanish house Coordonné. Inspired by classical tapestries, it blends historical references with graphic abstraction, creating an architectural surface of strong visual depth.

The Orlo silver collection, developed for the traditional Viennese silversmith Jarosinski & Vaugoin, translates the ideals of the Wiener Werkstätte into a reduced contemporary design language. Displayed on the Wave Table, the series includes tableware, vases, and bowls.

The Mayu Arm Chair is a sculptural lounge piece with architectural character. Its strong lines, refined materiality, and calm power create a counterpoint to the organic forms of the other works. It is also shown in Vienna for the first time.
