Intersecting Disciplines 23 February – 26 March 2010

lladro00053

Robert Dawson, Ikuko Iwamoto, Philip Li, Nicola Malkin, Sara Radstone, Bodo Sperlein and Julian Stair

Intersecting Disciplines presents recent work of seven contemporary artists and designers, graduates of the Ceramics BA Honours course at Camberwell College of Arts in a period from 1978 through to 2009.
The range of these professional practices represents the continuing evolving nature of the subject; from that of the studio ceramicist, industrial designer, commissioned public art, installation and performance artist.
The points of ‘intersections’ are numerous in terms of an awareness of craft skill, the discipline and understanding of material and process, scale, context, design and conceptual issues and are a timely reminder of the creative use of the medium of Ceramics.
This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of W.B.Dalton, Principal of Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts from 1899 – 1919, who was instrumental in establishing the Pottery Department in 1905 and was an important influence on the development of studio ceramics, both in the UK and USA.

Contour Furniture and Cascade Chandelier launch at Tent London, stand E17

chair1

Bodo Sperlein introduces his dynamic new furniture and lighting collection at Tent London, as part of the London Design Festival. Come and visit us in Content, stand E17, from Thursday 24 – Sunday 27 September, 2009. Visit the Tent London website for more information on opening times and visiting.

The Contour table and chair are part of a capsule furniture collection which continues his signature style of sensual and curvaceous forms – this time however working on a larger scale. Cascade is a new chandelier by Bodo Sperlein, produced entirely from chrome plated steel tubes. This visually arresting and playful form was inspired by the folly of water fountains. Like water, the highly polished surface reflects light and image. Cascade creates a dramatic focal point, by building up a series of simple forms rhythmically, with reference to 1920’s constructivism.

Yauatcha Atelier Collection Worldwide Launch

yauatcha group

Maison et Objet Paris, 4 – 8 September 2009

The Yauatcha Collection is a range of tea accessories commissioned by restaurant mastermind Alan Yau, and designed by Bodo Sperlein. Sperlein and Yau share a passion for detail and an intimate knowledge of the design of the eating experience. Both are fascinated by the relationship between food and design. The products themselves reflect the diverse heritage of tea culture, as a plant that has captured the attention of the world across history. Sperlein references the natural world from which this global commodity is derived. Tea sets are based on simple, curvaceous forms adorned with sculptural twig handles which invite you to touch. Glazed and unglazed bisque porcelain provides an elegant contrast between sensual gloss and velvety matt. The cast iron teapot and warmer are produced using a centuries-old Asian sand moulding technique. Tea strainers and infusers – traditional tools for brewing tea – take on lively organic shapes reminiscent of mercury, and are forged from stainless steel with silver plating.
